Tom Richmond: It's the Tories who make Cable look good

I HAD never heard of Philip Dunne MP. I am told he is the Conservative member for the racing town of Ludlow.  Yet he has just written an article that is highly critical of York-born Vince Cable, the Liberal Democrats economics spokesman.

According to Dunne, "there's nothing invincible about Vince", who he says has not been subjected to proper scrutiny.  He goes on: "Alas, a search of his speeches leaves one rather less convinced of his infinite wisdom. His lack of consistency makes him look all too distressingly like the arch-stereotype of a Liberal Democrat - someone who will say whatever appears to be popular at the time."

Yet this anonymous Tory misses a fundamental point as Cable launches a new book entitled The Storm: The World Economic Crisis & What it Means.

Vince Cable would not have been allowed to become the most popular - and credible - politician in Britain if Dunne's "dunces" on the Tory front bench had been doing their job properly, and holding this bankrupt Government, and its opponents, to account.

In many respects, it is the Conservatives who have
allowed Cable to become a media star.

At least the Lib Dem deputy leader has had the courage to put his thoughts down on paper. Has George Osborne, the "pipsqueak" Shadow Chancellor, the foresight to do likewise?  No - he's making up policy as he goes along.

Prophet and losses: an interview with Vince Cable appears in today's YP Magazine.
