Liberal Democrats buck the trend in Shropshire.

In a set of Local elections that Liberal Democrats nationally have acknowledged to be disappointing Shropshire has dared to be different.

Compared with the last full Unitary elections in Shropshire Lib Dems have gained one member, Labour have gained two and the independents have gained three. The big losers in Shropshire at this election have been the Conservatives, though they still retain control of the council.

Commenting, Dr Charles West of Shrewsbury Liberal Democrats said:
"Liberal Democrats have held onto all the seats we won in by-elections and made progress in a number of other divisions. We are conscious of the fact that these elections have been influenced by the national scene, and we are sorry to have lost an excellent local councillor in Bagley but it is good to see that Shropshire voters have to a great extent acknowledged the hard work and local campaigning of their Liberal Democrat councillors. We shall continue to campaign on local issues, and continue to speak out against Conservative policies both nationally and locally where we believe them to be wrong. Most of all, our councillors will continue to represent their local residents.
"We shall, no doubt, be watching tomorrow's results for the Town Council in Shrewsbury. In 2009 there were two Liberal Democrat Town Councillors. It will be interesting to see if there are more this time."
