Dr Charles West has expressed his strong support for fairer taxation ahead of the Liberal Democrats' keynote policy announcement today.

The Liberal Democrats will pledge to scrap income tax for four million low earners - those on less than £10,000 a year. If they win the next general election no-one will pay income tax on the first £10,000 they earn.

Dr West said: "This would be a big boost to families and pensioners in Shrewsbury who are struggling at this difficult time."

The party would fund this measure by reducing tax breaks on the most wealthy and by introducing an annual 1% tax for those owning homes worth more than £2m.

Nick Clegg MP, leader of the Liberal Democrats, and Vince Cable MP, LibDem Treasury Spokesman, will make a joint announcement on the party's taxation policy at 11am today.
