Fairer Votes? - a public meeting

CW
24 Nov 2010

Wednesday 1st December at Shrewsbury Sixth Form College at 7 p.m.

Harvey Cox will give a comparison of different voting systems including First Past the Post, Proportional Representation and the Alternative Vote. Harvey Cox is a recently retired lecturer in Political Science from Liverpool University and has both theoretical and practical knowledge of different voting systems. He will be available to answer questions after his talk.

Local Campaigner Charles West said,

"There is widespread discontent with our present voting system. It leaves many voters frustrated that their vote has been wasted, encourages others to use tactical voting to vote for someone who is not their preferred candidate and allows MPs to be elected by as few as a quarter of those eligible to vote. The First Past the Post system has contributed to the fact that about half the constituencies in the country are so-called 'safe seats', where the same party is elected time after time, and MPs are more answerable to their own party than to the voters of the constituency.

"This talk is for those who want to know more about the theory and practice of some of the other forms of election used both in this country and elsewhere."
