A Shropshire GP is to fight for the Shrewsbury and Atcham seat at the next General Election.

Borough Liberal Democrats have selected Dr Charles West as their parliamentary candidate.

Dr West went to school in Shrewsbury and took over from his mother as a GP in Church Stretton in 1974.

For five years he was a general manager with Shropshire District Health Authority. More recently he headed the directorate of stakeholder relations at the NHS Information Authority. He is currently practising part-time, mostly in Shrewsbury.

Dr West is a member of South Shropshire District Council and chairman of Ludlow Constituency Liberal Democrats Association.

He said: "I amĀ· seriously concerned at the damage being done to the NHS by Government policies of fragmentation and privatisation."
