Dr Charles West was formally adopted this week at a meeting of Shrewsbury Liberal Democrats.

Proposing, Councillor Roger Evans paid tribute to Dr West's long service to the County as a GP, as a manager of health services and as a councillor. When first elected as a district councillor Dr West polled more than three times as many votes as the next candidate, the Conservative. At the next local elections Dr West topped the poll once more. He wished Dr West all success in the forthcoming general election.

Responding, Dr West reported a steady and accelerating improvement in Liberal Democrat support and thanked the campaign team and all the volunteers for their hard work. Dr West said, "Our Party has no large financial backers and no corporate sponsors or finance from Trades Unions. We are therefore reliant on the good will and support of our members and individual supporters. We are enormously grateful to those who enable us to do all this work, and to give the message to the voters of Shrewsbury and Atcham that they do have a real choice in this election."
